GUIDED PRODUCT FINDER

Find the brake kit built for your trailer.

Answer 5 quick questions about your trailer axles, wheels, and brake type. Get the exact kit Hydrastar engineers recommend in under a minute.

Step 1 of 5

Pick the axle capacity and bolt pattern that matches your trailer. Check the sticker on your axle beam or GVWR plate.

Check the sticker or tag on your axle beam - it lists the capacity in lbs and the bolt pattern. You can also check your trailer's title or the manufacturer plate near the tongue.

Count the studs on one wheel hub and note the bolt circle diameter (e.g. 5 on 4-1/2 in., 8 on 6-1/2 in.).

Look at one of your wheel hubs and count the threaded bolts sticking out. Then measure the diameter of the circle they form - e.g. 5 studs on a 4.5 in. circle = 5 on 4-1/2 in.

Measure the diameter of one stud shaft. Common sizes: 1/2 in., 9/16 in., or 5/8 in.

Use a caliper or ruler to measure the diameter of one stud shaft. Common sizes are 1/2 in., 9/16 in., and 5/8 in.

How many axles does your trailer have?

Disc brakes offer better performance. Drum brakes are the traditional option.

Disc brakes offer better stopping power, heat dissipation, and are ideal for heavier loads or frequent use. Drum brakes are the traditional option and are more common on older trailers.

EDUCATION

Which brake system fits your trailer?

Three brake technologies dominate the market. Each fits a different trailer, weight, and use case. Here is how to choose.

MECHANICAL

Surge Brakes

Inertia-activated. The trailer pushes against the coupler under deceleration to apply the brakes.

Best for

Light boat trailers and rentals where electrical wiring is impractical.

  • No electrical connection needed
  • Low upfront cost
  • Works with any tow vehicle

Consider if

Not ideal for heavy loads, mountain towing, or backing up. Cannot be controlled by the driver.

ELECTRIC

Electric Drum

Brake controller in the tow vehicle activates magnetic drum brakes via 7-pin connection.

Best for

Lighter utility, cargo, and travel trailers under 7,000 lbs.

  • Driver-controlled with brake controller
  • Widely supported by tow vehicles
  • Lower cost than disc systems

Consider if

Drums fade under heavy loads and lose performance when wet. Not recommended for boat ramps.
