Three brake technologies dominate the market. Each fits a different trailer, weight, and use case. Here is how to choose.
MECHANICAL
Inertia-activated. The trailer pushes against the coupler under deceleration to apply the brakes.
Best for
Light boat trailers and rentals where electrical wiring is impractical.
Consider if
Not ideal for heavy loads, mountain towing, or backing up. Cannot be controlled by the driver.
ELECTRIC
Brake controller in the tow vehicle activates magnetic drum brakes via 7-pin connection.
Best for
Lighter utility, cargo, and travel trailers under 7,000 lbs.
Consider if
Drums fade under heavy loads and lose performance when wet. Not recommended for boat ramps.
ELECTRIC OVER HYDRAULIC
Electric signal from your brake controller drives a hydraulic actuator that powers disc brakes at the wheel.
Best for
Heavy trailers, boat trailers, and any rig where stopping power matters.
